Ugly Betty Season Premiere 2009-The premiere episode of the latest season of ‘Ugly Betty‘ will feature ‘Nothing But Nets,’ a UN-backed campaign which brings insecticide-treated bed nets to sub-Saharan Africa.

Malaria kills more than a million people each year, mostly children, and the show’s audience will be able to donate to the campaign to “send a net and save a life.”

Members of the ‘Ugly Betty’ team were back at the UN on Thursday, having filmed here earlier this year. Richard Hughes is the executive producer of the hit programme:

“We shot here in August. We had a great time. The whole UN was extremely supportive and facilitated our shooting. The storyline resonated with pretty much every member of our cast and crew. It was something we all could easily support and feel is very important.”

The partnership with ‘Ugly Betty’ is part of the UN Creative Community Outreach Initiative. Launched this year by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the initiative forges collaboration between the UN and the entertainment industry.

Kiyo Akasaka, head of the UN Department of Public Information, notes that “the UN realizes that television and film are powerful media by which new audiences can learn about global issues.”

The two-hour premiere episode of the latest season of ‘Ugly Betty’ will be broadcast on October 16.
