Nor Easter-A strengthening nor’easter moving up the Atlantic Coast will wallop the New York area with heavy rain and gusty winds over the next three days and may disrupt the Yankees baseball playoff games starting tomorrow night.

Rain started falling in the mid-Atlantic and southern New England regions today as the storm moved east from the Ohio Valley, AccuWeather.com said in a statement on its Web site. The storm may bring wind gusts as strong as 50 mph (80 kph) through tomorrow.

Temperatures will average 20 degrees to 25 degrees Fahrenheit below normal over the next several days in southeastern New York, northeastern New Jersey and southern Connecticut, the National Weather Service office in Upton, New York, said in a statement on its Web site.

The weather could interfere with the first two games of Major League Baseball’s American League Championship Series between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels, scheduled for tomorrow and Oct. 17 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

The Yankees moved their workout today to 11 a.m. from 1 p.m. to try to avoid the rain, according to a statement on the team’s Web site. Tickets for the first game will be honored whenever the game is played.

‘Playoff Stuff’

“I was driving in today and it was a little cold and raining a little bit, but it’s playoff stuff, man, you don’t even think about that,” Yankee outfielder Nick Swisher said before today’s workout. “Once you take that field and you hear the starting lineups, everything goes away.”

The weather service issued a coastal flood watch for areas of central New Jersey, eastern New York and southern Connecticut through tomorrow morning, meaning conditions will be favorable for flooding.

Some locations away from the coast may see a mix of rain and snow, the National Weather Service said. Several inches of snow are forecast to fall in the central Appalachian Mountains, which make the roads slippery and bring down trees and power lines, said AccuWeather.com, a private forecaster based in State College, Pennsylvania.

Travel delays began to build on the East Coast this morning, with the weather slowing flights heading to airports in Atlanta; Newark, New Jersey; New York; and Philadelphia by at least an hour.
