Despite many complaints from Guiding Light’s longtime fans, there weren’t enough of them left in these recession-era times.

Thanks to declining ratings – which is a problem for pretty much all soap operas nowadays – Guiding Light was taken off the air by CBS. The final episode was pegged for September 18′th, and fans have been waiting for the end – and crying about it – ever since.

Since the cancellation was announced months ago, Guiding Light has gotten many tributes from fans and the soap opera community. The Daytime Emmys honored the show with a special tributes a few weeks ago – though few people may have seen that too. But in the end, all the ceremonies and retrospectives couldn’t stop today’s show from being the final episode.

Guiding Light had survived until now for over 70 years, beginning as a radio serial in 1937. It had been on the air for 57 years, but the lights were turned out today after main characters Josh and Reva rode off into the sunset – and towards wedding bells yet again – in Josh’s pickup truck.

The final episode closed a major chapter in soap opera history, as the genre continues to struggle in these tough times for television. Ratings are down for so many other shows, and the Daytime Emmys have been reduced to the CW network. Yet Guiding Light is the only soap opera staple to have actually been canceled because of it – for now.

The Guiding Light final episode didn’t have the usual crazy antics, like deaths, resurrections, paralysis, and accidental incest. Instead, the soap opera ended things by giving fans closure, which is all they can cling to as their grief over the cancellation continues to grow.
