Sovereign Bank: Suspect Had Eyed Medway Bank Before Bellingham Robbery

In Bellingham A man who robbed the Sovereign Bank on North Main Street Tuesday morning was "casing out" neighboring banks beforehand, police said.

"We have pictures of him on surveillance at another bank in Medway about 15 minutes earlier," said Detective John McLaughlin. "We don't know exactly what he was doing."

McLaughlin said he may have been casing other banks before robbing Sovereign Bank around 10 Tuesday morning. Police did not identify the Medway bank.

Police described the suspect as a black man, in his mid-20s, 6 feet 2 inches, 180 pounds and clean shaven. Witnesses say he was wearing baggy jeans and a black sweatshirt with a gold image of the late rapper Tupac Shakur on the back.

The suspect passed a note and then took it back. He also told a female teller he had a gun but did not show it, police said.

He took an undisclosed amount of cash, McLaughlin said.

Video surveillance captured the suspect leaving Sovereign Bank and running toward the Rockland Trust Bank across the street.

Police also have surveillance footage of a large, dark, possibly maroon SUV, backed into a space in the rear parking lot of Rockland Trust. The suspect got into that car and took off, police said.

Now, police are asking the public to help identify the robber.

"We're looking for help if people can give us information," Detective Jennifer Gosselin said. "Be on the lookout."

Police don't believe this incident is connected to a bank robbery earlier this summer. In June, a heavyset, white man in his 40s robbed the Bellingham branch of the Milford National Bank and Trust at gunpoint.

That suspect has not been caught.
